This Natural Human Charter distils the whole worldview of ‘How to be a Natural Human’ into a set of lived commitments, which create something we can all hold, share, or use as a moral compass or guide, throughout our lives.
It allows every human being to apply the question, “What would a Natural Human do?” to every area of their lives and provides a concise but substantial charter, which captures the philosophy’s emotional core, ethical commitments, and practical orientation.
Natural Human Charter
1. Our shared humanity
Every person is equal in worth, dignity, and moral standing. No one’s value is determined by gender, race, nationality, wealth, belief, or ability. We recognise ourselves as members of one global family, bound by shared needs and a shared home.
2. Compassion as a way of life
Kindness, empathy, and forgiveness are the foundations of human flourishing. We choose non‑violence in thought, word, and action, and we reject systems that normalise cruelty, domination, or harm. We extend this compassion to all species capable of suffering.
3. Freedom with responsibility
Each person has the right to live, love, move, express, and think freely, provided these freedoms do not harm others. Bodily autonomy, reproductive choice, sexual and romantic freedom, and the right to a dignified death are essential expressions of this principle.
4. Living lightly on the Earth
We share the planet with countless other species whose lives matter in their own right. We commit to living within ecological limits, reducing consumption, respecting habitats, and designing human towns, cities and systems which regenerate rather than deplete the natural world.
5. Community over competition
Human beings thrive in cooperation, not rivalry. We support communal ownership where it serves the common good, shared resources, and systems that prioritise collective wellbeing over private accumulation. Communities should be places of belonging, safety, and mutual care.
6. Equality in power and voice
Democracy must be deep, participatory, and transparent. Everyone deserves a meaningful say in the decisions that shape their lives. We reject hierarchies that concentrate power in the hands of the few and embrace structures that distribute power fairly and openly.
7. A culture of curiosity and honesty
We value reason, evidence, creativity, and open inquiry. Education should nurture whole humans, emotionally, socially and intellectually and should not simply produce workers. Media and culture should uplift, inform, and connect rather than manipulate or divide.
8. Celebrating difference
Human diversity, culturally, physically, neurologically, sexually and spiritually, is a source of strength. We honour all cultures and beliefs that uphold human dignity, and we challenge practices that cause harm. We welcome difference as an opportunity to learn, grow, and expand our understanding.
9. Reclaiming our natural selves
We embrace our bodies without shame, celebrate authentic beauty, and recognise sexuality as a natural, joyful part of life. We value movement, play, creativity, and emotional openness as expressions of our full humanity.
10. A future built together
The world we seek cannot be delivered from above; it must be created through the choices of ordinary people. We commit to aligning our actions with our values, supporting one another, and building communities, systems, and cultures that reflect the best of what humans can be.
Natural Humanists believe in using & celebrating technology, whenever it has the potential to meaningfully improve human lives, or benefit other species, or the environment, or to spread the Natural Human message.
