How to be a Natural Human
New: Natural Humanist Pledge & Community Guidelines

New: Natural Humanist Pledge & Community Guidelines

Below are two companion pieces: a pledge for individuals and a set of community guidelines for groups, organisations, or shared spaces. Both are concise, speakable, and aligned with the Natural Humanist worldview.

Natural Humanist Pledge

  • I declare that I am a ‘Natural Human’ and am an integral part of the natural world, linked to all other species of living things and sharing with them common ancestors.
  • I acknowledge a duty and commitment to protecting and nurturing the natural world, minimising humans’ ‘footprint’ on the planet and restoring the Earth’s natural balance, as Earth is our shared home.
  • I commit, personally, to living lightly on the Earth and to protecting our shared ecosystems.
  • I acknowledge the equal worth of every person and recognise all humanity as one global family.
  • I will choose compassion, kindness, and non‑violence as the foundations of my actions.
  • I will honour freedom with responsibility, respecting the autonomy, dignity, and consent of all beings.
  • I will value cooperation over competition and contributing to communities built on trust and mutual care.
  • I will uphold equality in power and voice, supporting democratic participation for all.
  • I will cultivate curiosity, honesty, and learning, and reject fear‑based or divisive narratives.
  • I will celebrate human diversity in all its forms and defend the right of each person to live authentically.
  • I will reconnect with my natural self through movement, creativity, and acceptance of my body and emotions.
  • I will act each day to align my choices with these values and to help build a more compassionate world.

Natural Humanist Community Guidelines

1. Treat every person with equal dignity

No discrimination, hierarchy, or exclusion based on identity, background, belief, or circumstance. Every voice matters.

2. Practise compassion and non‑violence

Interactions should be grounded in kindness, patience, and empathy. Harmful behaviour—physical, emotional, or systemic—is not tolerated.

3. Honour autonomy and consent

Respect personal boundaries, bodily autonomy, and the right of individuals to make their own choices about relationships, expression, and identity.

4. Protect the planet we share

Use resources responsibly, minimise waste, and support practices that regenerate rather than deplete the natural world.

5. Prioritise cooperation and shared wellbeing

Foster collaboration, mutual aid, and communal stewardship of shared spaces and resources. Competition and hoarding undermine collective trust.

6. Ensure fairness in decision‑making

Use transparent, participatory processes. Power should be distributed, not concentrated. Everyone affected by a decision should have a meaningful say.

7. Encourage curiosity, learning, and honest dialogue

Promote open inquiry, respectful debate, and evidence‑based understanding. Reject misinformation, manipulation, and fear‑driven narratives.

8. Celebrate diversity and self‑expression

Support cultural, personal, and creative expression. Differences are welcomed as sources of insight, resilience, and beauty.

9. Create a culture of acceptance around bodies and emotions

Normalise safe vulnerability, emotional openness, and body‑positivity. Reject shame‑based norms and support healthy, joyful relationships, both with oneself and with others.

10. Act with integrity and shared purpose

Align actions with values. Contribute to a community where people feel safe, supported, and inspired to help build a more compassionate and connected world.
