This table compares the resource intensity of obtaining important “safety net” nutrients via Precision Food Supplements (grown in bioreactors/vats) versus Standard Food Sources.

In the future-tech system (bioreactors), land efficiency assumes an 8-storey facility with 6 stacked rows, providing a massive “land-multiplier” effect. Standard food sources represent traditional horizontal agriculture or livestock farming.

Nutritional Efficiency: Supplements vs Standard Food Sources

Strictly sorted by Supplement Land Efficiency. Ratings are based on the resource cost per bioavailable unit of the target nutrient.

Efficiency Analysis

1. The “Molecular Skyscraper” (Supplements)
Nutrients like B12 and Omega-3 achieve a perfect 5-star rating because they are produced via microbial fermentation or micro-algae in vertical bioreactors. This method bypasses the need for massive grazing lands or the energy-intensive harvesting of marine life. A single 8-storey facility can produce the equivalent nutrient yield of thousands of hectares of traditional farmland 11,13.

2. The Livestock Resource Gap (Standard Food)
Obtaining B12 from beef or D3 from sheep lanolin (the standard non-vegan source) is inherently inefficient. Livestock require significant land for grazing and huge volumes of “virtual water” to grow their feed 12. By extracting these nutrients directly from bacteria or lichen in a controlled environment, we eliminate the 90% energy loss that occurs when nutrients move up the food chain from plants to animals 12.

3. The Marine & Soil Challenge (Iodine)
While raw seaweed is relatively efficient, the land and water “cost” of traditional dairy (the primary UK iodine source) is high. Precision Iodine Extracts from tank-grown algae are superior because they prevent over-harvesting of wild kelp forests, which are vital carbon sinks 12,13.
